Minecraft Basics

Welcome to the World

Your journey begins in a world made entirely of blocks. Everything from the dirt under your feet to the clouds in the sky is a cube you can interact with. Your primary goal, especially at the start, is simple: survive.

Minecraft has two main game modes: Survival and Creative. In Creative mode, you have unlimited resources and can fly, making it perfect for building massive projects without constraints. We'll be focusing on Survival mode, where you must gather resources, manage your health and hunger, and protect yourself from creatures that come out at night.

Your First Day

When you first load into a new world, the clock is ticking. You have one daytime cycle, about 10 minutes, to prepare before monsters appear in the darkness. Your first priority is to gather wood.

Walk up to a tree and hold down your left mouse button while aiming at the trunk. Your character will start punching the wood until the block breaks and drops a smaller, collectible log.

Collect a few logs. Now, press 'E' to open your inventory. You'll see your character, a 2x2 crafting grid, and storage slots. This small grid is for basic crafting. Take your logs and place them into one of the crafting slots. For each log, you'll get four wooden planks. Planks are one of the most fundamental building materials in the game.

To make anything more complex than planks, you'll need a bigger crafting area. You can create a Crafting Table by placing one wooden plank in each of the four slots of your inventory's crafting grid. Drag the resulting Crafting Table to your hotbar at the bottom of the screen, close the inventory, and place it on the ground with a right-click.

Tools of the Trade

Punching trees is slow. Tools make everything faster. By right-clicking your new Crafting Table, you'll open a 3x3 crafting grid. The first thing you'll want to craft are sticks, which are the handles for all your tools. Place two wooden planks vertically in the grid to create sticks.

With sticks and planks, you can make your first set of wooden tools. A pickaxe is essential for mining stone, an axe speeds up chopping wood, and a shovel makes digging dirt and sand much quicker. Gathering resources with the proper tool is always more efficient.

In the recipes above, 'P' stands for Wooden Plank and 'S' stands for Stick. The empty spaces are just as important as the filled ones. Use your new axe to gather more wood, and then use your pickaxe to dig into a hillside or underground to gather some cobblestone.

Surviving the Night

As the sun begins to set, your focus must shift from gathering to safety. Hostile creatures, often called mobs, spawn in the darkness and will attack you on sight. A simple shelter is all you need to survive your first night.

You can build a basic house out of wood or dirt, or simply dig a small cave into the side of a hill. The goal is to create an enclosed space with no way for mobs to get in. Make sure it's at least two blocks high so you can stand up inside. A 3x3 space is a good start. Once you're inside, you can block off the entrance with more dirt or wood blocks.

Light is your best friend. Mobs cannot spawn in well-lit areas. To create light, you need torches, which are crafted from coal and sticks. You can often find coal exposed on the sides of stone cliffs or by digging a little underground.

Once you've survived the night, you can venture back out in the morning. Your basic loop will be to gather resources during the day and either build, craft, or mine safely in your shelter at night. This cycle of exploration and preparation is the foundation of every great Minecraft adventure.
