Introduction to the MiG-31 Foxhound
The Foxhound's Reign
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union faced a monumental challenge: defending an immense border against potential intruders. Their primary guardian of the skies was the MiG-25 Foxbat, a jet famous for its blistering speed and ability to fly at the edge of space. For all its strengths, however, the Foxbat had its limits. Its powerful but primitive radar struggled to detect low-flying targets like cruise missiles, and its engines were designed for short, high-speed dashes, not long patrols.
Soviet designers needed a successor. They envisioned an aircraft that could patrol vast, remote territories for hours, see everything from high-altitude bombers to terrain-hugging missiles, and engage multiple threats simultaneously. The result was a profound evolution of the Foxbat's design: the Mikoyan MiG-31, codenamed "Foxhound" by NATO. While it inherited the Foxbat's general shape and incredible speed, the MiG-31 was a completely new beast on the inside, built for a more complex and demanding mission.
A New Kind of Hunter
The MiG-31 was purpose-built as a dedicated interceptor. Its job wasn't dogfighting with nimble fighters, but to act as a flying air defense command post. It was designed to sprint across huge distances, detect intruders from far away, and eliminate them with long-range missiles, often before the enemy even knew they were being tracked.
A key breakthrough was its Zaslon S-800 radar. This was the world's first electronically scanned array radar installed on a fighter jet. Unlike older mechanically scanned radars that had to physically pivot a dish, this new system could steer its radar beam electronically. In simple terms, it could look in multiple directions at once, allowing a single MiG-31 to track numerous targets and guide missiles to several of them simultaneously. This was a revolutionary capability.
This advanced radar allowed the MiG-31 to perform "look-down/shoot-down" maneuvers, tracking and engaging low-flying targets that would have been invisible to its predecessor, the MiG-25.
Furthermore, the MiG-31 was designed for teamwork. Using a secure datalink, a group of four Foxhounds could coordinate their sensors to cover a patrol area nearly 1,000 kilometers wide. One aircraft could track a target while another, flying in silence with its own radar off, could launch a surprise attack. This network-centric approach made them incredibly effective at guarding the sprawling and often desolate Siberian frontier.
Foxbat vs Foxhound
Though they look similar, the MiG-25 and MiG-31 are fundamentally different aircraft tailored for different roles. The addition of a second crew member in the MiG-31 highlights this shift. The pilot focused on flying the aircraft, while a dedicated Weapons Systems Officer in the rear cockpit managed the powerful radar and coordinated intercepts.

The airframe was also strengthened to handle the stresses of sustained supersonic flight at low altitudes, a feat the high-flying Foxbat wasn't built for. More efficient turbofan engines gave the Foxhound the endurance needed for its long-range patrol missions, a crucial improvement over the fuel-guzzling turbojets of the MiG-25.
Still on Guard
Decades after its introduction, the MiG-31 remains a vital part of the Russian Aerospace Forces. Its core design—a fast, high-flying platform with a powerful radar and long-range missiles—is still incredibly relevant for defending Russia's vast airspace. The fleet has undergone significant upgrades to keep it modern.
Modernized variants feature updated avionics, new digital systems, and the ability to carry more advanced weaponry, including hypersonic missiles. These upgrades have transformed the aging interceptor into a multi-role weapon system, ensuring that the Foxhound will continue to patrol the skies for years to come. It stands as a testament to a design philosophy focused on pure speed and overwhelming radar power.
