The Science Behind It
Microlearning isn't just a trend; it's rooted in how our brains are wired. One key concept is Cognitive Load Theory. Our working memory, the mental space where we process new information, is limited. If you try to stuff too much in there at once, you get overloaded, and learning stops. By presenting information in small chunks, microlearning respects this limit and helps prevent mental traffic jams.
Another important principle is the spacing effect. Research shows that we learn and remember things better when we space out our learning sessions over time rather than cramming everything in at once. Because microlearning modules are short, they naturally encourage you to spread out your learning. Reviewing a topic for five minutes every few days is more effective than a single, two-hour study session.
So, we break what is to be learned into many small, manageable chunks, since small things fit into the brain much more easily than large ones, and bodies of knowledge no matter how great can be divided into trivially learnable chunks.
This method also directly combats the Forgetting Curve, a model that shows how we lose information over time if we don't try to retain it. Short, repeated learning sessions interrupt this process, reinforcing neural pathways and moving knowledge from short-term to long-term memory.

This format is also great for "just-in-time" learning. Need to remember how to create a pivot table in a spreadsheet? A two-minute video is far more helpful in that moment than searching through a lengthy training manual. This immediate applicability makes learning more relevant and powerful.
