This is the core of a technique called —an Italian term meaning "to lean on."

Instead of immediately letting your ribs collapse and forcing air out, Appoggio involves maintaining the expanded posture of your inhalation for as long as possible while you sing. This creates a gentle, controlled antagonism between the muscles of inhalation (the diaphragm and external intercostals) and the muscles of exhalation (the internal intercostals and abdominal muscles). Think of it like a tug-of-war where both sides are pulling with equal force, resulting in a perfectly stable rope.

This muscular balance keeps your ribcage expanded and prevents the lungs from collapsing suddenly, which would cause a burst of uncontrolled air. By maintaining this expansion, you create a steady, reliable pressure underneath your vocal folds.

  3. Hiss Slowly: Begin a long, slow, steady hiss (like "ssssss"). Your goal is to make the sound last as long as possible with absolutely no wavering in intensity.

As you hiss, focus on maintaining the outward expansion of your rib cage. Your lower abdominal muscles should feel like they are gradually drawing inward and upward to control the release of air. You are fighting the collapse. This is Appoggio in action.

Once you feel this sensation, try applying it to a simple five-note scale on a vowel like 'ah.' The goal isn't volume; it's consistency.
