What is Place Value?
In the world of numbers, a digit's position is everything. The digit 7 can mean seven, seventy, or seven hundred. It all depends on where it sits inside a number. This concept is called place value.

The value of a digit based on its position in a number, such as ones, tens, hundreds, and so on.
Think of it like this: you have three boxes labeled "Ones," "Tens," and "Hundreds." If you put the digit 5 in the "Ones" box, you have 5. But if you move that same digit 5 to the "Tens" box, you now have 50. Move it to the "Hundreds" box, and it becomes 500. The digit didn't change, but its value did because its position changed.
Let's break down the number 472.
- The 2 is in the ones place, so its value is simply 2.
- The 7 is in the tens place, so its value is 70.
- The 4 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 400.
When we put them all together, we get $400 + 70 + 2 = 472$. Each digit has its own job, and its place tells you exactly what that job is.
Why It Matters
Understanding place value is the key that unlocks arithmetic. When you add or subtract numbers with more than one digit, you need to line up the ones with the ones, the tens with the tens, and so on. It ensures you're comparing and combining the right things.
Without place value, our number system would be chaotic. We wouldn't know if "12" meant thirteen (), one next to two, or what we currently understand as twelve (). Place value brings order to numbers and gives us a clear framework for performing all kinds of calculations.
One of the biggest struggles I see with kids who don’t understand regrouping is that they don’t understand place value and the fact that they’re just rearranging the numbers.
Getting a solid grip on this idea now makes every other math skill easier to learn down the road. It's the foundation upon which everything else is built.
