Hearing the Sounds in Words

Before we learn to read or write, we learn to speak. Our brains are naturally wired to process spoken language. The first step to becoming a good speller isn't about memorizing letters, but about learning to hear the individual sounds inside spoken words. This skill is called phonemic awareness.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and play with the smallest sounds in spoken words.

Think of the word “mat.” It’s a short, simple word, but it's not one single sound. It's made of three tiny units of sound, or phonemes: /m/, /a/, and /t/. A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound that can change a word's meaning. For example, if you change the /m/ sound in “mat” to a /s/ sound, you get a completely new word: “sat.”

Being able to hear these separate sounds is a crucial first step. We'll explore two key skills for working with phonemes: taking words apart (segmentation) and putting them back together (blending).

Breaking Words Apart

Phoneme segmentation is the skill of breaking a word down into its individual sounds. It's like taking a Lego creation apart, piece by piece. When you hear the word “run,” you can separate it into its three phonemes: /r/, /u/, /n/.

Let’s try it with the word “fish.” Say it slowly. What’s the first sound you hear? It's /f/. What's the middle sound? /i/. And the last sound? /sh/. So, “fish” has three sounds: /f/, /i/, /sh/.

Notice that even though “fish” has four letters, it only has three sounds. The letters 's' and 'h' work together to make a single phoneme, /sh/.

Counting the phonemes in a word is great practice. Don't count the letters, count the sounds you can hear.

Putting Sounds Together

If segmentation is taking words apart, phoneme blending is putting them back together. This is the skill you use when you “sound out” a new word. Imagine someone gives you three sounds: /d/, /o/, /g/. When you blend them together quickly, you hear the word “dog.”

This skill directly connects spoken sounds to reading. When a child sees the letters C-A-T on a page, they can sound them out, /k/…/a/…/t/, and then blend those sounds together to read the word “cat.” Blending is the action that turns separate sounds into recognizable words.

Try blending these sounds: /sh/ /i/ /p/. What word do you get? Ship!

Connecting Sounds to Letters

Once you can hear the individual sounds in words, the next step is to connect those sounds to the letters that represent them. This is the bridge from phonemic awareness (sounds) to phonics (letters). The letters or letter combinations that represent a single sound are called graphemes.

A powerful way to build this sound-symbol connection is through a technique called word mapping. It’s a simple process that makes the relationship between phonemes and graphemes visual and concrete.

Here's how it works:

  1. Say the word: Start by saying the word out loud, for example, "ship."
  2. Tap the sounds: Tap out the phonemes you hear. For "ship," you'd tap three times: /sh/ (tap), /i/ (tap), /p/ (tap).
  3. Map the sounds: Draw a box for each sound you tapped.
  4. Write the letters: Write the grapheme (the letter or letters) that represents each sound into its corresponding box.

This process forces you to think about the sounds first, rather than just memorizing a sequence of letters. It strengthens the neural pathways between what you hear and what you see on the page, building a solid foundation for both spelling and reading.
