Defining Your Knowledge Perimeter
Jumping into a new field can feel like trying to drink from a firehose. The sheer volume of information is overwhelming, and it's easy to get lost in irrelevant details. The first step toward expertise isn't memorization, but limitation. You need to define your knowledge perimeter.
Think of it as drawing a map before you explore a new country. Instead of wandering aimlessly, you identify the borders. This perimeter establishes what's inside and outside the scope of your learning. It's a conscious decision to focus on a specific, manageable area, preventing you from chasing down every tangent.
Establishing boundaries turns an endless sea of information into a navigable body of water. Your goal is to define what you need to know, which also clarifies what you can safely ignore for now.
Mapping the Taxonomy
Once you have a border, you need to understand the terrain inside. This is where you map the subject's taxonomy — its internal structure and the relationship between its constituent parts. Every field, from physics to marketing, has a hidden hierarchy of concepts. Your job is to make it visible.
Start with high-level resources. Think encyclopedias (like Wikipedia), industry reports, university course syllabi, or comprehensive review articles. Finding the Core
Not all knowledge within your perimeter is equally important. In almost any domain, a small number of concepts provide a disproportionate amount of value. This is the Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 rule, applied to learning.
Roughly 20% of the concepts in a field will give you 80% of the ability to operate effectively within it. Your primary mission is to identify and master that 20%.

A specific, highly-specialized algorithm used in a niche industry is peripheral. You prune the latter from your initial plan to focus all your energy on the former.
