The Modern Triple's Split Personality

Triumph's identity is deeply connected to the three-cylinder engine. The traditional 'triple' uses a 120-degree crankshaft, where the crank pins for each cylinder are spaced evenly around the crankshaft's axis. This results in a power stroke every 240 degrees of rotation, delivering a smooth, linear flow of power that builds predictably to a thrilling top-end rush. It’s a design celebrated for its balance of twin-like torque and four-cylinder horsepower, accompanied by a distinctive howl.

But engineering doesn't stand still. To enhance the triple's versatility, especially for dual-sport adventure bikes like the Tiger, Triumph re-imagined the core of the engine.

The T-Plane Revolution

Enter the T-Plane crankshaft, a clever piece of engineering designed to give the engine a dual character. Unlike the evenly spaced 120-degree crank, the T-Plane arranges the crank pins at 0, 90, and 180 degrees. This layout changes everything about the way the engine fires and delivers power.

The T-Plane design results in a 1-3-2 firing order. The gap between power pulses is no longer even. There is a short 180-degree gap, followed by two longer 270-degree gaps. This sequence intentionally bunches some power strokes closer together, creating what Triumph calls a 'big bang' firing order.

At low RPMs, this uneven firing feels remarkably like a V-twin. The distinct power pulses provide a lumpy, tractable character, giving the rider a direct feel for rear-wheel traction. This is ideal for navigating tricky off-road terrain or managing grip in wet city conditions. As the revs climb, the longer gaps smooth out, and the engine's character shifts back towards the familiar, free-revving rush of a traditional triple.

The T-Plane crank gives the engine a split personality: the low-end grip and feel of a twin, and the top-end performance of a triple.

The Speed Triple's engine is engineered for maximum performance. A key focus was reducing internal mass and inertia.
