TOEIC Test Overview
What is the TOEIC?
The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is designed to measure your English skills for the workplace. It shows how well you can understand and use English in everyday business situations. Unlike academic tests, the TOEIC focuses on practical, real-world communication.
The TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests measure English-language skills used in the workplace.
The entire test is multiple-choice and is delivered on paper or on a computer. It's a single, continuous exam.
Test Structure and Timing
The test is divided into two timed sections. You will complete the Listening section first, followed immediately by the Reading section. The total time for the test is about two and a half hours, including time for administrative procedures.

You must complete each section within the given time limit. You cannot go back to the Listening section once you've started the Reading section.
Question Types
The questions are designed to test a range of skills. Let's look at the different parts of each section.
Listening Section: You will listen to a variety of questions and conversations recorded in English. It's all about understanding spoken English in different contexts.
This section has four parts:
- Part 1: Photographs. You'll see a photo and hear four statements. You choose the statement that best describes the picture.
- Part 2: Question-Response. You'll hear a question or statement followed by three responses. You select the best response.
- Part 3: Conversations. You'll listen to short conversations between two or three people and answer questions about what you heard.
- Part 4: Talks. You'll hear short talks, like announcements or news reports, and answer questions based on the information.
After the listening portion, you'll move directly to the reading tasks.
Reading Section: This section tests your ability to understand written English materials.
This section has three parts:
- Part 5: Incomplete Sentences. You'll read a sentence with a missing word or phrase and choose the best option to complete it.
- Part 6: Text Completion. You will read texts, such as emails or articles, with sentences or words missing. You select the best options to fill in the blanks.
- Part 7: Reading Comprehension. You'll read a variety of texts, like articles, ads, and emails, and answer questions about them. Some questions will be about a single text, while others refer to multiple texts.
Scoring
Your score on the TOEIC is based on the number of questions you answer correctly. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so it's always best to guess if you are unsure.
The TOEIC does not penalize you for incorrect answers, so it’s in your best interest to answer every question, even if you’re unsure.
You will receive a separate score for the Listening section and the Reading section, each ranging from 5 to 495 points. These two scores are then added together for a total score that ranges from 10 to 990. Your score report will also provide a description of the English-language strengths typical of test-takers at your score level.
