A powerful strike isn't just about muscle. It's about physics. The most effective martial artists are masters of transferring energy from the ground, through their bodies, and into a target. This process is called the , and it's the engine behind every punch and kick.

Think of it like cracking a whip. The handle (your hips and core) moves relatively slowly, but a wave of energy accelerates down the length of the whip, culminating in a supersonic crack at the tip. In striking, your feet push off the ground, rotating your hips and torso. This energy flows up through your shoulder and finally explodes out of your fist or foot.

For example, a Kung Fu practitioner may use their hips and core muscles to generate torque, which is transferred through the limbs to create powerful strikes.

The goal is to coordinate this sequence perfectly. A breakdown anywhere in the chain—a weak core, a slow hip turn—leaks energy and reduces the impact. Different martial arts have developed unique methods for optimizing this chain.
