Know Your Machine

Before you take your first stroke, it helps to know your way around the rowing machine, often called an ergometer or "erg." It might look complicated, but it's made of a few simple, key parts that work together.

Here’s a quick rundown of the main parts:

  • Monorail: The long rail the seat slides on.
  • Seat: The part you sit on. It’s designed to slide smoothly back and forth.
  • Handle: What you pull on. It's connected to the flywheel by a chain or cord.
  • Foot Stretchers: Where you place your feet. They have straps to hold you in securely.
  • Flywheel: The circular fan at the front. Pulling the handle makes it spin, creating resistance.
  • Damper: A lever on the side of the flywheel that controls how much air flows in. We'll cover this in more detail shortly.
  • Performance Monitor: The screen that displays your workout data.

Get Strapped In

Properly setting up your feet is the first step to a good rowing session. It ensures you have a solid platform to push from, allowing for a powerful and safe stroke.

First, adjust the height of the foot stretchers. Most machines have a simple pin or sliding mechanism. You want the strap to go across the widest part of your foot, right over the ball of your foot. This allows your heel to lift slightly as you come forward, which is a natural part of the rowing motion.

Once the height is right, pull the straps. They should be snug enough that your feet don't slide around, but not so tight that they're uncomfortable or cut off circulation.

The Damper Setting

One of the most misunderstood parts of the rower is the damper, that lever on the side of the flywheel, usually numbered 1 to 10. Many beginners crank it up to 10, thinking it means more resistance and a better workout. That's not quite right.

The damper doesn't control resistance; it controls airflow. Think of it like the gears on a bicycle. A low setting is like a sleek, fast racing bike. It feels lighter and you can move quickly. A high setting is like a heavy mountain bike going uphill. It feels heavier and slows your stroke down.

The resistance in rowing comes from you. The harder and faster you drive with your legs, the more the flywheel spins and the more resistance you create. The damper just changes how that effort feels.

For most people, a setting between 3 and 5 is ideal. This range closely mimics the feel of rowing on water. It allows you to generate power efficiently without tiring out your muscles too quickly from an unnecessarily heavy feel.

Reading the Monitor

The performance monitor is your coach. It gives you real-time feedback on how you're doing. While it tracks many different things, there are a few key metrics to focus on when you're starting out.

Don't worry about mastering all the numbers at once. For your first few sessions, just get familiar with the feel of the machine and watch how your split time changes as you push harder or ease off. Getting comfortable with the setup is the first big step.
