What to Expect on Test Day

The PTE Academic is a computer-based English proficiency test used for university admissions and immigration worldwide. Unlike many other exams, the entire test is taken in a single two-hour session at a secure test center. There's no human examiner; your responses are recorded and graded by an AI, which ensures impartial and consistent scoring.

The test is divided into three main parts, each timed separately: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening. Let's break down what you'll encounter in each section.

Part 1: Speaking and Writing

This is the first and longest section of the test, lasting between 54 and 67 minutes. It assesses your ability to speak and write effectively in English using academic-style questions. You'll use a microphone to record your spoken answers and the keyboard to type your written responses.

The question types are varied to test different skills.

Repeat sentence	Listen to a sentence and repeat it exactly.
Describe image	Describe the key information in an image, like a graph or chart.
Re-tell lecture	Listen to a short lecture and summarize it in your own words.

Summarize written text	Read a passage and summarize it in a single sentence.
Write essay	Write a 200–300 word argumentative essay on a given topic.

Notice that some tasks combine skills. For example, 'Re-tell lecture' tests both your listening and speaking abilities. This integrated approach is a key feature of the PTE Academic.

Part 2: Reading

The second part of the test focuses on your reading skills and takes about 29 to 30 minutes. You'll be presented with a series of texts and questions designed to test your ability to understand written academic English.

Part 3: Listening

The final section, Listening, lasts between 30 and 43 minutes. You will listen to various audio and video clips and answer questions based on what you hear. The clips feature speakers with different accents, reflecting what you might encounter in an international academic setting. You'll only hear each clip once.

How Scoring Works

PTE Academic uses a scale from 10 to 90. Your score report will show your overall score, as well as scores for your communicative skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. The AI scoring system evaluates your performance on factors like fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.

Because many questions test multiple skills at once (like listening and writing), your performance on one question can affect the score for more than one skill area. For example, the 'Write from dictation' task affects both your listening and writing scores.

Understanding the test format is the first and most important step in your preparation. It allows you to anticipate the types of questions, manage your time effectively, and focus your studies on the right skills.
