What is a Minimum Viable Product?

Think about building a new car. You could spend years designing every detail, from the engine to the heated seats, before a single customer ever sits in it. But what if, after all that work, you discover people wanted a motorcycle instead? You've wasted a lot of time and money.

The Minimum Viable Product, or MVP, offers a different approach. Instead of building the fully-featured car, you start by building a skateboard. It’s not fancy, but it solves the core problem: getting a person from point A to point B. This skateboard is your MVP.

An MVP is the most basic version of a product that can be released to a small group of early users. It has just enough features to be functional and provide value, but no more.

The key word here is minimum. The goal isn't to launch a cheap or unfinished product. It's to launch the simplest possible product that allows you to start a critical feedback loop with real customers.

The Goal is Learning

The primary purpose of an MVP is not to generate revenue or attract thousands of users on day one. Its purpose is to test your most fundamental assumptions. Do people actually have the problem you think they have? Does your solution actually solve it for them?

By releasing a simple version to early adopters—users who are often more forgiving and eager to try new things—you can gather real-world data and feedback. This validated learning is incredibly valuable. It helps you understand what users truly want, what features are essential, and which of your initial ideas were wrong.

This process saves resources by preventing teams from building complex features that nobody ends up using. The feedback from the skateboard (MVP) tells you if you should add handlebars (a scooter), a motor (an electric bike), or if you were on the right track toward building that car all along.

Ultimately, an MVP is a scientific tool. You start with a hypothesis about a problem and a solution. The MVP is the experiment you run to test that hypothesis.
