Deconstructing Arguments at Speed

On the LSAT, speed and accuracy aren't opposing forces; they're two sides of the same coin. Rushing leads to errors, but precise, methodical analysis allows you to move quickly and confidently. The foundation of this skill is breaking down an argument into its core components instantly.

Every argument you encounter is built from two key ingredients: a conclusion (the main point the author is trying to prove) and premises (the evidence or reasons given to support that conclusion). Your first job is always to find the conclusion. It's the anchor of the entire argument. Look for indicator words like "therefore," "thus," or "consequently," but also be prepared for conclusions that are stated without such signposts.

Always identify the conclusion first. Everything else in the argument either supports it (premise), opposes it, or is background information.

Once you have the conclusion and premises, you must look for what isn't there: the assumption. An assumption is the unstated belief that connects the evidence to the conclusion. The author takes it for granted, but the argument can't stand without it.

Consider this simple argument: "The sky is cloudy, so it will rain soon."

  • Premise: The sky is cloudy.
  • Conclusion: It will rain soon.
  • Assumption: Cloudy skies are a reliable indicator of imminent rain.

This might seem obvious, but on the LSAT, the assumptions are more subtle and complex. Your ability to pinpoint them is what separates a good score from a great one. This unstated link is often where an argument's vulnerability lies.

High scorers don't just answer the question asked; they anticipate the kind of answer required based on the question's specific demands. Wasting time means re-evaluating your goal for each question. Instead, you should have a pre-set mental playbook.

Spotting Flawed Logic

Many arguments on the LSAT are intentionally flawed. Your job is to act as a quality control inspector, identifying the logical defects that make a conclusion unsound. Recognizing common fallacies quickly is essential, especially for Flaw questions, but it's also critical for Weaken and Strengthen questions.

Here are a few high-frequency fallacies you must be able to spot in your sleep:

Causation Flaw: The most common flaw of all. The author assumes that because two things happened together (correlation), one must have caused the other. The classic example is assuming that because ice cream sales increase when crime rates rise, eating ice cream causes crime. The flaw is ignoring a third factor, like hot weather, that causes both.

Flaw of Equivocation: The author uses a key word or phrase with two different meanings in the argument, creating a deceptive link. For example: "All stars are giant balls of gas. My favorite actor is a star. Therefore, my favorite actor is a giant ball of gas." The word "star" is used with two different meanings.

Ad Hominem (Source Argument): The author attacks the person or source making an argument rather than the argument itself. "Dr. Smith's theory about climate change is wrong because he is a terrible dresser." The quality of Dr. Smith's fashion sense is irrelevant to the validity of his scientific theory.

Part-to-Whole (and Whole-to-Part): The author assumes that what is true of a part of something must also be true of the whole, or vice-versa. "Every player on the team is a superstar, so it must be the best team in the league." This ignores the importance of teamwork and coaching.
