IOE Exam Structure

The Exam Format

The Institute of Engineering (IOE) entrance exam is a computer-based test designed to evaluate your aptitude for engineering studies. The entire exam is a single paper that lasts for 2 hours. It covers five core subjects from the high school science curriculum.

All questions are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), where you'll select the correct answer from a set of options. The exam is scored out of 140 marks. The distribution of marks across the subjects is fixed, highlighting the areas you'll need to focus on.

One of the most important aspects of the IOE exam is its marking scheme. While a correct answer earns you one full mark, an incorrect answer will result in a penalty. This is known as negative marking.

For every incorrect answer, 10% of the full mark (0.1 marks) is deducted from your total score. There is no penalty for unanswered questions.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the IOE entrance exam, you must meet specific academic requirements. These criteria ensure that all applicants have the foundational knowledge needed for an engineering program.

The main requirements are:

  • You must have passed your 10+2 or equivalent exams in the science stream, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as major subjects.
  • You need to have secured a minimum of 45% in your 10+2 exams or a grade of 'C' in each subject.

Students who have taken A-Level exams must also meet the equivalent grade requirements set by the university.

The Application Process

The application process is handled entirely online through the official IOE entrance exam portal. It's crucial to pay close attention to the deadlines, which are typically announced a few weeks before the exam.

Here’s a general outline of the steps:

  1. Visit the Official Portal: Go to the IOE entrance website (entrance.ioe.edu.np).
  2. Fill out the Form: Complete the online application form with your personal and academic details.
  3. Upload Documents: You will need to upload digital copies of your photograph, identification (like a citizenship card or passport), and academic transcripts.
  4. Pay the Fee: Submit the application fee through one of the designated online payment methods.
  5. Admit Card: Once your application is processed, you can download your admit card, which you must bring to the exam center.
