The Water-to-Paint Ratio

Mastering watercolour isn't about mastering paint; it's about mastering water. The relationship between the amount of water and the amount of pigment you use, both on your palette and on your paper, dictates everything from colour intensity to edge quality. It’s the core skill that separates beginners from experienced artists.

The key to watercolor is knowing how much water-to-pigment ratio you need for a particular section.

Think of your paint consistency in terms of familiar liquids. This isn't a strict rule, but a helpful guide to understand how your paint will behave. A watery mix will flow freely and appear transparent, while a thick mix will be opaque and stay put.

The consistency you choose on your palette is only half the equation. The other half is the state of the paper you're painting on.

Stages of Paper Wetness

The amount of water on your paper is just as important as the water in your brush. The interaction between the two creates all the signature effects of watercolour. Timing your brushstrokes to match the paper's dampness allows you to control the paint's behaviour, from soft, diffused clouds to sharp, crisp lines. There are four key stages of wetness to learn to recognise.

Recognising these stages comes with practice. Get into the habit of tilting your paper to the light to check the sheen and gently touching a clean, unpainted corner to feel the temperature and dampness.

Controlling the Flow

Understanding ratios and paper wetness gives you the tools to both add and remove pigment with intention. One of the most powerful techniques for controlling water is lifting.

A clean, damp brush is often called a 'thirsty' brush. It acts like a small sponge, wicking up excess water and pigment from the paper.

To perform a thirsty brush lift, simply rinse your brush, then blot most of the water out on a paper towel or sponge. The brush should be damp, not wet. When you touch it to a still-damp area of paint, capillary action pulls the wetter pigment from the paper into the drier bristles of your brush. This is perfect for softening hard edges, creating highlights, or correcting small mistakes.

The same principle explains a common watercolour frustration: backruns, also known as cauliflowers or blossoms. These occur when you introduce a very wet brush into an area that has already started to dry (the damp or glistening stage). The excess water from your brush pushes the drying pigment away, creating a feathery, unwanted texture as it settles.

To prevent backruns, you need to match the wetness of your brush to the wetness of your paper. If the paper is damp, your brush should also be just damp, not soaking wet. Always assess the state of the paper before adding another layer.
