The CELPIP-General Test is a complete English language assessment done on a computer in a single sitting. It takes about three hours to complete, including a short break. The test is designed to measure your ability to use English in everyday situations, like talking with friends, understanding news broadcasts, or writing an email.

It is broken down into four sections, each testing a different skill. Let's look at the structure.

Note that some questions in the Listening and Reading sections are unscored. These are used for test development and will look just like the scored questions, so it's important to try your best on every question.

The Listening section measures how well you understand spoken English in different situations. You'll hear audio clips featuring Canadian accents and then answer multiple-choice questions about them.

The section begins with a practice task to get you comfortable with the format. After that, you'll move through six scored parts.

The tasks vary in content and context. You might listen to a conversation about solving a problem, a short news report, or a discussion where people share their opinions. The goal is to see if you can follow the main ideas and important details.

After the Listening section, you will move on to Reading. This part tests your ability to understand written text. The passages are taken from real-life materials like emails, articles, and charts. You'll answer questions to show you comprehend the information and viewpoints presented.

The tasks include:

• Reading Correspondence: Understanding an email or letter.
• Reading to Apply a Diagram: Using information from a text to interpret a diagram.
• Reading for Information: Finding specific details in a longer passage.
• Reading for Viewpoints: Understanding opinions presented in a text.

Next is the Writing section, where you'll demonstrate your ability to communicate in writing. This section has two tasks. For the first task, you'll be asked to write an email. For the second, you'll respond to a survey, expressing your opinion on a topic. You'll need to watch the word count and the timer for each task.

Finally, the Speaking section assesses your spoken English. You'll be given prompts on the screen and will record your responses into a microphone. This section is designed to see how clearly you can express yourself on various topics.

The tasks include giving advice, describing a scene, talking about a personal experience, and expressing your opinion. Like the other sections, it starts with a practice task to get you ready.
