Your Brain Isn't an Empty Box

Learning isn't about pouring information into an empty head. It’s more like building with LEGOs. To build something new, you need existing bricks to connect it to. Every new idea you encounter is a new brick, and it has to snap onto something you already know.

This existing knowledge is your foundation. When you learn about the American Revolution, it helps if you already know what a 'revolution' is and where 'America' is. The new information about taxes and tea parties has a place to go. It connects to your existing mental map of the world. Without that foundation, the facts are just floating, unattached, and easily forgotten.

New knowledge sticks best when it has old knowledge to stick to.

But prior knowledge can be a double-edged sword. If what you think you know is wrong, it can block you from learning the right information. Imagine trying to learn that the Earth is round when you're convinced it's flat. You have to unlearn the old, incorrect idea before you can truly grasp the new one.
