Mastering Teamfight Tactics Compositions
Introduction to Teamfight Tactics
Welcome to the Arena
Teamfight Tactics, or TFT, is a strategy game where you build an army and watch it fight. Think of it like being the coach of a fantasy sports team, but instead of athletes, you’re drafting magical champions. It’s an “auto-battler,” which means you handle the strategy, but the fights play out on their own.
You and seven other players compete in a free-for-all battle. Your goal is simple: be the last one standing. Each player has a life total, represented by their “Little Legend.” When your team of champions loses a round, your Little Legend takes damage. If your health drops to zero, you’re out.
Anatomy of a Round
Every round in TFT has three main parts: the Shopping Phase, the Strategy Phase, and the Combat Phase.
1. Shopping Phase: At the start of each round, you get a small amount of gold. You use this to buy champions from a rotating shop of five options. Don't see anyone you like? You can spend gold to “reroll” the shop for a new set of champions. All players pull from the same shared pool, so if someone else buys a popular champion, there are fewer of them left for everyone else.
2. Strategy Phase: This is where you arrange your team. You have a limited time to place the champions you've bought onto your side of the game board. You can also give them powerful items to hold. Think of it like setting up your pieces on a chessboard before the match begins.
3. Combat Phase: Once time is up, the fighting starts automatically. Your team will battle another player's team (or neutral monsters). Your champions will move, attack, and use special abilities on their own. You just get to watch and see if your strategy paid off. After the fight, the next round begins, and the cycle repeats.
The Battlefield
The game board is a grid of hexagons. Your side is the bottom half, and your opponent's is the top half. Where you place your champions matters.
Positioning
noun
The strategic placement of champions on the game board to maximize their effectiveness and protect them from threats.
A good starting point is to divide your team into two groups: frontline and backline.
- Frontline: These are your tough, durable champions. Place them in the front one or two rows. Their job is to absorb damage and protect your more fragile units.
- Backline: These are your damage dealers. They usually have powerful attacks but can't take many hits. Place them in the back row, shielded by your frontline, so they can attack safely from a distance.
This basic setup is just the beginning. As you play, you'll learn how to adjust your positioning to counter different enemy teams. Understanding these fundamentals of drafting, economy, and positioning is the first step to mastering the game.
