Double Lift Refinement

The Invisible Double Lift

You already know how to lift two cards as one. Now, let's make that action truly deceptive. The goal of a perfect double lift isn't just to pick up two cards; it's to do so in a way that is utterly indistinguishable from turning over a single card. The slightest hesitation or unnatural finger movement, often called a 'get-ready', can signal suspicion to an alert spectator. Eliminating this tell is what separates a basic trick from a piece of magic.

The first step is to master the preparation so it can be done secretly and quickly. This is where the Pinky Count comes in.

Secret Preparation

The Pinky Count is a method for secretly counting cards off the top of the deck with the tip of your pinky finger. It's done while you're talking or gesturing, making it completely invisible.

Start by holding the deck in a mechanic's grip. Apply light pressure downwards on the top left corner of the deck with your left thumb. This will cause the back-right corner of the cards to bevel slightly. You can then use the flesh of your left pinky to discreetly contact the corner and count off one, two, or more cards by feel. Once you've counted two, you simply maintain a tiny break under them with your pinky tip. This break is your secret setup, obtained with no suspicious movements.

Two Professional Lifts

With a pinky break in place, you are ready to execute the lift. Here are two of the most popular and deceptive methods used by professionals: the Strike Double and the Push-Off Double.

The Strike Double Lift: Your right hand approaches the deck from above. As if you were taking a single card, your right thumb contacts the back of the deck near the top right corner. It moves forward, 'striking' the double card above the break and cleanly lifting it away from the deck. The motion is quick, direct, and looks identical to taking the top card.

The Push-Off Double Lift: In this version, your left thumb pushes the top two cards (held as one block above the break) slightly to the right. Your right hand comes over and takes the pushed-off double from above, with the right thumb on top and fingers below. This method is exceptionally natural because it mirrors how most people would casually deal or show someone the top card.

Natural Handling

Consistency is the secret ingredient. Your double lift turnover must look exactly like your single card turnover. If you turn a single card by grabbing it at the corner and flipping it end-over-end, your double lift must do the same. If you sweep a single card and flip it sideways, your double must follow suit.

One of the most convincing turnovers is the Stuart Gordon Turnover. After lifting the double, you place it back on the deck, but slightly out-jogged. Then, you use your index finger to cleanly flip it face up onto the pack. This action is casual and disarming. Practice turning over a single card this way fifty times, then do it with a double. The goal is for them to be mechanically and visually identical.

Finally, you need a way to 'clean up', or separate the cards after the reveal. The KM Move, a creation of the prolific , is a beautiful solution. After turning the double face-down on top of the deck, your thumb pushes the single top card forward. At the same time, the fingers of the same hand pull the second card back, holding it squared with the deck. Your other hand cleanly takes the single pushed-off card to place on the table or in a spectator's hand. It looks like you're just dealing the top card, but you've secretly switched it.

To perform sleight-of-hand effectively, magicians complement the magical techniques of manipulation with an understanding of the laws of human interest.
