Understanding Sleep Basics
The Nightly Cycle
Sleep isn't like flipping a switch. When you fall asleep, your brain and body go through a series of cycles, each lasting about 90 minutes. These cycles are made up of different stages, broadly categorized as non-REM and REM sleep.
Most of the night is spent in non-Rapid Eye Movement (non-REM) sleep, which has three phases:
- N1: This is the light doze when you're just drifting off. Your muscles relax, and your brain waves start to slow down. It's easy to be woken up during this stage.
- N2: You're now in a more stable sleep. Your body temperature drops and your heart rate slows. Your brain produces short bursts of activity that help it resist being woken by external stimuli.
- N3: This is deep sleep, also known as slow-wave sleep. It's the most restorative stage, where your body works on repairing tissues, strengthening the immune system, and growing. Waking up from N3 sleep is difficult, and you'll likely feel groggy and disoriented.
After deep sleep, you enter the most famous stage: Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. This is when most vivid dreaming occurs. Your brain activity looks similar to when you're awake, but your body is essentially paralyzed. This temporary paralysis keeps you from acting out your dreams. REM sleep is crucial for memory consolidation and emotional regulation.
You repeat this cycle several times, with deep sleep dominating the first half of the night and REM sleep periods getting longer toward the morning.
Your Internal Clock
Your desire for sleep isn't random. It’s governed by your circadian rhythm, a 24-hour internal clock that regulates your sleep-wake cycle. This master clock is located in a part of your brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN).
The most powerful influence on your circadian rhythm is light. When your eyes detect sunlight in the morning, the SCN sends signals to raise your body temperature and produce hormones like cortisol to help you wake up. Conversely, when it gets dark, the SCN signals the release of melatonin, a hormone that makes you feel drowsy.
This is why exposure to bright screens from phones or computers at night can disrupt sleep. Your brain interprets that artificial blue light as daylight, suppressing melatonin production and making it harder to fall asleep. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends, helps keep your internal clock synchronized.

On the flip side, regularly skimping on sleep has serious consequences. Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to an increased risk of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
