You've found a scientific paper that looks promising. But before you dive in, it's worth asking: where was it published? Not all scientific journals are created equal. The journal's reputation acts as a first, crucial filter for the quality of the research inside.
Scientists use metrics to gauge a journal's influence and prestige. The most common one is the Impact Factor.
Impact Factor

A measure of the average number of citations to recent articles published in a specific journal. It's calculated by dividing the number of times articles from the journal were cited in a given year by the total number of citable articles published in the two previous years.
A higher Impact Factor generally suggests that a journal's articles are frequently cited by other researchers, indicating a significant influence on the field. However, it's not a perfect measure. A journal might publish a few highly-cited review articles that inflate its score, or it might be in a niche field with naturally lower citation rates.
Another metric you'll encounter is the h-index.
h-index

A metric that attempts to measure both the productivity and citation impact of a scholar or a journal. An h-index of 'h' means that a scholar/journal has published 'h' papers, each of which has been cited at least 'h' times.
While often applied to individual researchers, the h-index can also be used to evaluate the consistent impact of a journal's publications. It rewards a steady stream of influential papers over a few one-hit wonders. Together, these metrics help you quickly assess the general standing of the journal you're reading.
