The Bottom-Up Cross
The first step in speeding up your solve is to flip your perspective upside down. Instead of building the white cross on the top layer (the 'daisy' method) and then moving it to the bottom, we're going to build it directly on the bottom, with the white center piece facing down.
Why? This single change is crucial for what comes next. By solving the cross on the bottom, your eyes are free to look at the top two layers. This allows you to track pieces for the next stage of the solve, First Two Layers (F2L), while your hands are finishing the cross. It’s the key to a smooth, continuous solve without awkward pauses.
Relative Positioning
Here's the next big idea: the white edge pieces don't need to match their corresponding colour centers right away. They only need to be in the correct position relative to each other. The standard colour scheme on most cubes is Green-Red-Blue-Orange in clockwise order (or counter-clockwise, depending on your starting point). As long as your white edge pieces follow this sequence around the white center, you're on the right track.
For example, the white-green edge should be next to the white-red edge, which is next to the white-blue edge, and so on. Their final alignment with the green, red, and blue center pieces can wait.
Once the four edge pieces are correctly placed around the white center in the right sequence, a single D-layer turn is all it takes to align the entire cross with the centers. This saves moves and, more importantly, mental energy. You solve the structure first, then align it.
Planning Your Moves
It might sound complex, but here's a reassuring fact: any cross can be solved in eight moves or fewer. There's always an efficient solution. The challenge is finding it during the 15-second inspection period allowed in competitions. This is your time to plan the entire cross without touching the cube.
During inspection, your goal is to locate the four white edge pieces. Mentally trace the path of each piece to its final position on the bottom layer. Look for 'easy' pieces that can be solved in one or two moves, and plan how to solve the harder ones without disturbing those already in place. This skill is a core part of the , a system refined by many speedcubers over the years.
To execute your planned moves without fumbling, you need good finger tricks for the bottom layer. Constantly re-gripping the cube to turn the D face costs precious time. The best way to turn the D layer is with the ring finger or pinky of your non-dominant hand. A D move (clockwise) is typically a 'pull' with your ring finger, while a D' move (counter-clockwise) is a 'push'.
Mastering these finger tricks allows you to turn the bottom layer without affecting your grip or your view of the upper layers. This fluid motion is essential for transitioning seamlessly from the cross to the F2L stage, which is where the real time savings begin.
