A System Before Zero
Long before the numbers 0 through 9 became the global standard, the Romans had their own system. For over a thousand years, Roman numerals were the way people in Europe and beyond recorded numbers. You can still spot them today on clock faces, in book chapters, and on building cornerstones, a testament to their long legacy.
The Romans didn't invent their number system from scratch. They borrowed and adapted it from their neighbors, the Etruscans, who lived in Italy before Rome became a major power. The Etruscan system used symbols for 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100, which the Romans modified for their own use.

The origins of these symbols are practical. The symbol 'I' likely comes from a simple tally mark on a stick or stone. The symbols for C and M are easy to remember as they align with the Latin words centum (one hundred) and mille (one thousand).
Numerals in Daily Roman Life
In ancient Rome, these numerals were everywhere. They were essential for trade in the marketplace, for engineers marking measurements on aqueducts, and for officials recording laws and dates on public monuments. Army legions were numbered with them, and important events were carved into stone using this system.
Because the system didn't have a zero and wasn't ideal for complex math, Romans often used an abacus for calculations. They would perform the calculation on the abacus and then simply write down the final result using their numerals. For them, it was a practical system for recording quantities, not for doing arithmetic on paper.
