Think of it like planning a road trip. You know your destination (scope), you have a timeline for getting there (schedule), and you have a budget for gas and food (cost). The Three Core Components
EVM works by comparing three key values. Understanding these is the first step to using the system. We won't do any calculations here, but it's important to know what each one represents.
Planned Value (PV)

The authorized budget assigned to the work scheduled to be completed by a certain date. It's your baseline plan.
In our road trip example, if you planned to complete 25% of the drive by the end of day one, the PV would be 25% of your total trip budget. It's the value of the work you planned to do.
Earned Value (EV)

The value of the work actually completed to date. It measures your progress in monetary terms.
If by the end of day one you only completed 20% of the drive, your EV would be 20% of the total trip budget. This is the value of the work you've actually done.
Actual Cost (AC)

The total cost actually incurred for the work completed to date. It's what you've actually spent.
This one is simple. It's the total amount of money you've spent on gas, food, and lodging by the end of day one. By comparing PV, EV, and AC, project managers can get a clear picture of project health.
Why Use EVM?
The main benefit of EVM is its power as an early warning system. Traditional project management might track budget and schedule separately. You might know you've spent 50% of your budget, but that figure is meaningless without knowing if you've also completed 50% of the work. EVM connects the dots.
By integrating cost, schedule, and scope, EVM allows teams to:
