Advanced Campaign Structuring

Prospecting vs. Retargeting

To effectively scale your advertising, you must separate your audiences into distinct campaigns based on their familiarity with your brand. The two primary categories are prospecting and retargeting.

Prospecting campaigns target cold audiences—people who have not previously interacted with your business. The goal here is awareness and discovery. You're introducing your brand, products, or services for the first time.

Retargeting campaigns, on the other hand, focus on warm audiences. These are people who have already engaged with you in some way, such as visiting your website, adding an item to their cart, or watching one of your videos. The objective is to guide them further down the funnel toward conversion.

Separating these campaigns is crucial. It allows you to tailor your messaging, creative, and offers to match the audience's stage in the customer journey. A new user needs an introduction, while a user who abandoned their cart might just need a reminder or a small incentive.

This separation also provides cleaner data. By isolating these audiences, you can accurately assess the performance of your top-of-funnel efforts (prospecting) versus your bottom-of-funnel efforts (retargeting). You'll know precisely which ads are effective at bringing in new customers and which are best at closing the deal.

Scaling Your Campaigns

Once you identify a winning ad set, the next step is to scale it to reach more people and generate more results. There are two primary methods for scaling: vertical and horizontal.

Vertical Scaling

noun

The process of gradually increasing the budget of an existing, high-performing campaign or ad set.

Vertical scaling is the most straightforward approach. You've found something that works, and you simply give it more money to work with. However, you must be careful. A large, sudden budget increase can reset Meta's learning phase, disrupting the algorithm's optimization and potentially harming performance.

As a rule of thumb, avoid increasing the budget by more than 20-25% every 24-48 hours. This gradual approach allows the algorithm to adjust smoothly without resetting its learning.

Horizontal Scaling

noun

The process of duplicating a successful ad set to target new, distinct audiences.

Instead of increasing the budget on a single ad set, horizontal scaling involves taking your winning ad creative and showing it to different groups of people. This could mean targeting new lookalike audiences (e.g., expanding from a 1% lookalike to a 2-5% lookalike) or testing completely new interest-based segments that are related to your original successful audience.

Scaling MethodApproachBest For
Vertical ScalingIncrease budget on a successful ad set.Maximizing results from a proven audience.
Horizontal ScalingDuplicate ad set to target new audiences.Finding new pockets of customers and expanding reach.

Campaign Budget Optimization (CBO)

Campaign Budget Optimization (CBO) is a setting that allows Meta to automatically manage your campaign budget across all of its ad sets. Instead of setting individual budgets for each ad set (known as Ad Set Budget Optimization, or ABO), you set one overarching budget at the campaign level.

The algorithm then distributes this budget in real-time to the ad sets that are delivering the best results. If one ad set starts performing better than another, CBO will automatically allocate more of the budget to the winner. This simplifies management and maximizes efficiency.

Simplifying account structure by having a single campaign that targets all ad sets to all customers enables the AI to learn more quickly, delivering more efficient results.

CBO is particularly powerful when you have multiple ad sets in a single campaign and want to let the algorithm do the heavy lifting of budget allocation. It prevents you from overspending on underperforming ad sets and ensures your budget is constantly working as hard as it can. This approach streamlines campaign management and often leads to a lower overall cost per result.

Now, let's test your knowledge on these advanced structures.

What is the primary goal of a prospecting campaign?

Quiz Questions 2/5

An advertiser identifies a highly successful ad creative and decides to show it to new, related interest groups and expanded lookalike audiences. What scaling method is being used?

By mastering these strategies—separating audiences, scaling intelligently, and leveraging CBO—you can build sophisticated, scalable campaign structures that drive better results.
