What Makes an Argument

An argument isn't just a disagreement or a shouting match. In logic and critical thinking, an argument is a structured statement designed to persuade someone of a particular point. It's made of two key ingredients: a conclusion and one or more premises.

The conclusion is the main point you're trying to make. The premises are the reasons or evidence you provide to support that conclusion.

Think of it like building with blocks. The premises are the foundation, and the conclusion is the structure you build on top of them. If the foundation is solid, the structure is strong.

For example:

  • Premise: The weather forecast predicts a 90% chance of rain.
  • Conclusion: You should take an umbrella today.

This is a simple argument. The reason (premise) directly supports the suggested action (conclusion). A strong argument connects its premises to its conclusion in a way that feels logical and convincing.

Two Paths of Reasoning

Arguments generally follow one of two paths of reasoning: deductive or inductive. Understanding the difference is key to both making and evaluating arguments.

Deductive Reasoning

A top-down approach that moves from a general rule to a specific conclusion. If the premises are true, the conclusion is guaranteed to be true.

Deductive arguments aim for certainty. They work like a mathematical proof. Consider this:

  • General Premise: All employees at Company X must have a security badge.
  • Specific Premise: Sarah is an employee at Company X.
  • Conclusion: Therefore, Sarah must have a security badge.

If both premises are true, the conclusion is undeniable. There's no room for doubt.

Inductive Reasoning

A bottom-up approach that moves from specific observations to a general conclusion. The conclusion is probable, but not guaranteed.

Inductive reasoning deals in probability, not certainty. It's how we make sense of the world based on our experiences.

  • Specific Observation: The last five times I ordered a pizza from this restaurant, it arrived in under 30 minutes.
  • Conclusion: My pizza will probably arrive in under 30 minutes tonight.

This conclusion is reasonable, but it's not a guarantee. There could be unusual traffic or a problem at the restaurant. Induction gives us a strong prediction, but there's always a chance it could be wrong.

The Role of Evidence

Whether your reasoning is deductive or inductive, your premises need support. That support is evidence. Without evidence, a claim is just an opinion. Evidence is what gives an argument its weight and credibility.

Evidence can take many forms, including:

  • Facts and Statistics: Measurable, verifiable data.
  • Expert Testimony: The findings or opinions of a recognized authority on the subject.
  • Anecdotes and Examples: Specific stories or instances that illustrate a point.
  • Physical Evidence: Tangible objects or traces.

Strong arguments are built on strong evidence. The more reliable and relevant your evidence, the more persuasive your argument will be.

Imagine you're trying to convince a city council to install a new traffic light. A weak argument would be, "We need a light because that intersection feels dangerous." It's based on feeling, not fact.

A strong argument would use evidence: "This intersection needs a traffic light because accident data from the past year shows a 50% increase in collisions, and a traffic study conducted by engineers recommends a light as the most effective solution."

Here, the evidence—accident data and an expert study—provides a solid foundation for the conclusion. It moves the conversation from personal opinion to a reasoned proposal.
