Introduction to Oracle APEX

What is Oracle APEX?

Oracle Application Express, or APEX, is a tool for building web applications quickly. It's a low-code development platform, which means you can create powerful apps with minimal hand-coding. Instead of writing everything from scratch, you use a web-based visual interface with drag-and-drop components and wizards.

APEX is a low-code, browser-based development platform that runs on Oracle Database.

This approach allows both professional developers and people with less coding experience to build and deploy applications fast. You can create anything from simple reports to complex data management systems. APEX provides pre-built components for forms, charts, reports, and navigation, which handles a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

APEX Architecture

One of the most important things to understand about APEX is that it isn't a separate piece of software you install. It lives directly inside the Oracle Database. Think of the Oracle Database as a powerful workshop; APEX is a sophisticated set of tools that comes with it. This tight integration is key to its performance and security.

Because APEX is a feature of the database, it can access and manipulate data with very little overhead.

The architecture is quite simple. When you use an APEX application, your web browser sends a request over the internet. This request is received by a web server, typically Oracle REST Data Services (ORDS). ORDS acts as a communicator, translating the web request into a language the database understands. It passes the request to the APEX engine running inside the Oracle Database. The engine processes the logic, queries the data, and generates a web page, which ORDS then sends back to your browser.

Why Use APEX?

APEX offers several significant advantages for web development, especially for applications that are data-heavy.

The declarative nature of APEX is its superpower and helps to achieve discoverability and maintainability.

The main benefits include:

  • Speed: Since it's a low-code platform, development cycles are much shorter. You can build and deploy a functional prototype in hours or days, not weeks or months.
  • Simplicity: You don't need to be an expert in multiple programming languages and frameworks. Much of the complexity is handled by the platform itself, letting you focus on the business logic.
  • Scalability: Because APEX leverages the power of the Oracle Database, applications can handle large amounts of data and users. The architecture is designed to be efficient and scalable from the ground up.
  • Security: APEX comes with built-in security features to protect against common web threats, like SQL injection and cross-site scripting. It provides a strong foundation for building secure applications.
  • Cost-Effective: If you already have an Oracle Database license, APEX is available as a no-cost feature. This makes it an incredibly attractive option for organizations already invested in the Oracle ecosystem.

These features make APEX a powerful tool for rapidly creating and deploying secure, scalable, and professional-looking web applications.
