First, Understand the Story

Word problems aren't just math problems; they're tiny stories. Before you even think about numbers, your first job is to understand what's happening in the story. Who are the characters? What are they doing? Reading a word problem is a bit like being a detective. You need to understand the situation before you can solve the mystery.

The secret to solving word problems is to stop trying to solve them right away. Instead, just read and understand.

A great strategy is to read the problem twice. The first time, don't worry about the numbers at all. Just get the gist of the story. The second time, start looking for the important details and the numbers that go with them.

Find the Clues

Once you understand the story, it's time to gather your clues. This means identifying the key pieces of information you'll need. Not every number or detail in a word problem is useful. Your job is to separate what matters from what doesn't.

Let's look at an example:

A library receives a shipment of 7 new boxes of books. Each box contains 20 books. The librarian, Ms. Davis, inspects the shipment and finds that 4 books are damaged. How many books from the shipment are not damaged?

On your second read, pull out the numbers and what they represent. You're looking for specific quantities and the final question being asked.

Notice how we ignored Ms. Davis's name? It helps the story, but it isn't a mathematical clue. Learning to spot and set aside this extra information will make problems feel much simpler.

Translate Words into Math

Now that you have your clues, you can translate the story into a mathematical expression. Certain words and phrases are signals for specific operations.

Break down complex mathematical problems into smaller, manageable components to enhance understanding and problem-solving skills.

Words like "each," "every," or "per" often signal multiplication. They tell you that you have multiple groups of the same size. In our library example, "7 new boxes" and "Each box contains 20 books" points directly to multiplication.

Words like "gives away," "less," "fewer," or "damaged" often signal subtraction. They tell you a quantity is being taken away. The problem states that "4 books are damaged," which means we need to remove them from the total.

We've now successfully translated the entire word problem into a single mathematical expression. By breaking it down step-by-step, we've created a clear plan without getting lost in the words.
