Currency and Math Fundamentals

Gold, Gems, and Drafts

In MTG Arena, your two main currencies are Gold and Gems. You earn Gold for free by completing daily quests and winning games. Gems are the premium currency, mostly bought with real money. While you can't directly convert Gold to Gems, you can use Gold to enter events, like drafts, that pay out rewards in Gems. This makes drafting the primary engine for converting your time into a complete collection.

The key exchange rate to remember is for event entries. A Premier Draft, for example, costs 10,000 Gold or 1,500 Gems. This establishes an effective conversion ratio of approximately 6.67 Gold to 1 Gem. However, most players use a simpler mental shortcut: for drafting, Gold is roughly five to seven times less valuable than Gems. Because drafting is the most efficient way to acquire cards, our goal is always to maximize our Gem income to fuel more drafts.

Your primary goal should be to use Gold to enter drafts, which in turn rewards you with Gems and cards, fueling a self-sustaining collection-building cycle.

Daily quests are the bedrock of your Gold income. Always try to re-roll 500 Gold quests for a chance at a 750 Gold quest. Over time, this small optimization adds up, giving you extra drafts and accelerating your progress significantly. Think of it as earning an extra draft every few weeks just by clicking a button.

The Gem Value of a Card

Once you own four copies of a particular rare or mythic rare, the game's duplicate protection kicks in. If you would open another copy of that card from a pack, you receive Gems instead. This sets a baseline value for each card you collect beyond a full playset.

Mythic Rare40 Gems

These values are your safety net. They ensure that even when you open cards you already have, you're still getting something that helps you enter your next draft. The more complete your collection becomes, the more packs will convert directly into Gems, speeding up the cycle.

The 2025 Reprint Rule Change

A recent update changed how reprints are handled, making set completion faster. Previously, if you owned four copies of a card, opening a reprint of it in a new set would immediately give you Gems. For example, if you owned four copies of Llanowar Elves from Dominaria, opening one in a new set would grant you 20 Gems.

Starting in 2025, the system prioritizes your collection. If you own a playset of a card, the first copy of its reprint you open from a new set will be that new version of the card. You won't get Gems until you open a fifth copy of that card across all sets (your original playset plus this new one). This is a huge benefit. Instead of a small gem reward, you get a new, playable card that counts toward the new set's completion total. It effectively reduces the number of unique cards you need to acquire to finish a set.

Jump In! for a Head Start

When a new set releases, resist the urge to immediately buy packs or jump into a draft. The most cost-effective way to start your collection is often the 'Jump In!' event. For only 1,000 Gold, you choose two themed packets and combine them into a deck to play.

You get to keep all the cards, including at least two rares or mythic rares. Because the card pool for the packets is curated from the new set, this is an incredibly efficient way to acquire many new rares for a low gold cost. It populates your collection early, making subsequent drafts more valuable as you're more likely to find cards you don't own yet.
