Mastering Monopoly
Monopoly Basics
The Board and Its Spaces
The Monopoly board is a square track with 40 spaces. Most of these are properties you can buy: 22 color-coded streets, four railroads, and two utilities. The goal is to collect sets of these properties to charge other players rent when they land on them.
Besides properties, there are several special spaces. The four corner squares have unique functions:
- GO: Every time you pass or land on GO, you collect $200 from the bank.
- Jail/Just Visiting: If you land here normally, you're 'Just Visiting' and nothing happens. If a card or a roll sends you to Jail, you're stuck there until you pay a fine, use a 'Get Out of Jail Free' card, or roll doubles.
- Free Parking: Officially, this space does nothing. Many people play with a 'house rule' where fines and taxes are put in the middle of the board, and the player who lands on Free Parking collects it all. This is not part of the official rules.
- Go to Jail: Land here, and you go directly to the Jail space. You do not pass GO and do not collect $200.
Other spaces include two tax squares (Income Tax and Luxury Tax) where you pay the bank a fixed amount, and the Chance and Community Chest spaces, which require you to draw a card.
Cards, Cash, and Construction
Landing on a Chance or Community Chest space means you must draw the top card from the corresponding pile and follow its instructions immediately. These cards can be good or bad. You might receive money, have to pay a fee, move to a specific space, or get a 'Get Out of Jail Free' card.
Managing your money is the core of the game. When you land on an unowned property, you can buy it from the bank for the price listed on the board. If you choose not to, the property is auctioned off to the highest bidder. Once you own a property, you can collect rent from any player who lands on it.
Your main goal is to acquire a full color-set of properties. Once you own all properties in a group (like all three orange properties), you can start building houses and eventually hotels on them. This dramatically increases the rent you can charge, making these properties much more valuable.
If you're short on cash, you can mortgage your properties to the bank for half their value. You can't collect rent on mortgaged properties, but it's a way to raise funds quickly to pay off a debt or buy another key property.
How to Win the Game
The objective in Monopoly is simple: become the wealthiest player and drive everyone else into bankruptcy.
A player is declared bankrupt when they owe money to another player or the bank and cannot pay it. To raise the funds, they must sell their buildings back to the bank and mortgage properties. If they still can't cover the debt after liquidating all their assets, they are out of the game.
If the debt was to another player, the bankrupt player gives all their remaining assets, including mortgaged properties, to that player. The game ends when only one player is left standing.
The last player with any money, property, or other assets is the winner.
This is a good time to check your understanding of the basics.
What is the primary requirement for a player to be allowed to build houses on their properties?
According to the official rules described, what happens when a player lands on the Free Parking space?
Mastering these fundamental rules is the first step toward building your real estate empire.
