Of the four basic math operations, division is the one we use for splitting things into equal groups. Imagine you have 12 cookies and you want to share them fairly among 3 friends. How many cookies does each friend get? You're performing division.
Division helps answer two main types of questions:
- How many items are in each group? (e.g., 12 cookies split among 3 friends means 4 cookies per friend.)
- How many equal groups can you make? (e.g., If you have 12 cookies and want to make bags with 3 cookies each, you can make 4 bags.)
It's a process of fair sharing or grouping.
To talk about division, we use specific terms for each part of the problem. Let's break them down.

The number that is being divided. It's the total amount you start with.
divisor

The number you are dividing by. It's the number of groups you're making or the size of each group.
quotient

The result of the division. It's the answer to the division problem.
Let's visualize that cookie example: 12 divided by 3 equals 4.
What About Leftovers?
Sometimes numbers don't divide perfectly. What if you had 13 cookies to share among 3 friends? Each friend would get 4 cookies, but you'd have 1 cookie left over. That leftover amount is called the remainder.

The remainder must always be smaller than the divisor. If it's not, it means you can make at least one more full group.

The Inverse of Multiplication
Just as subtraction is the opposite of addition, division is the inverse of multiplication. This relationship can be very helpful.
