Theories of Learning
How do people learn? It’s a simple question with complex answers. Over the years, psychologists and educators have developed several theories to explain the process. These aren't just academic ideas; they shape how courses are taught, how apps are designed, and even how we train our pets. Understanding them helps us create better learning experiences.
Learning theories describe the conditions and processes through which learning occurs, providing teachers with models to develop instruction sessions that lead to better learning.
Let's start with one of the oldest and most straightforward theories: behaviorism.
Learning by Doing (and Repeating)
Behaviorism

A learning theory that focuses on observable behaviors, suggesting that learning is a change in behavior resulting from stimulus-response associations made by the learner.
Behaviorism views the mind as a “black box.” It doesn't worry about what’s happening inside a person's head—thoughts, feelings, motivations. It only cares about what can be seen and measured: the behavior.
The core idea is that we learn through reinforcement. Think about training a dog. You say “sit,” the dog sits, and you give it a treat. The treat is a positive reinforcement. After enough repetition, the dog learns to associate the command “sit” with the action of sitting to get a reward. This is behaviorism in a nutshell. Learning is simply a response to a stimulus. It’s all about repetition, feedback, and reward or punishment.
In behaviorism, learning is a direct result of conditioning. Correct responses are reinforced, and incorrect ones are not.
Opening the Black Box
Behaviorism was dominant for decades, but some thinkers felt it was missing a big piece of the puzzle: the mind itself. This led to the rise of cognitivism.
Cognitivism

A learning theory that focuses on the internal mental processes, viewing the mind as an information processor, much like a computer.
Cognitivists opened the black box. They argued that learning is more than just a change in behavior; it's a change in a learner’s mental state. This theory uses the analogy of a computer. Our brains take in information (input), process it, store it in memory, and then generate a response (output).
This framework explains things that behaviorism struggles with, like problem-solving, memory, and language. When you learn a new math formula, you're not just memorizing a response. You're understanding the concept, storing it in your long-term memory, and learning how to retrieve and apply it later. That’s an internal, mental process.
Building Your Own Knowledge
While cognitivism focuses on how we process information, constructivism takes it a step further. It proposes that learners don't just passively receive information; they actively build their own understanding of the world.
Constructivism

A learning theory suggesting that people construct their own understanding and knowledge through experiences and by reflecting on those experiences.
Imagine giving two people the exact same box of LEGO bricks. They won't build the same thing. Each person will create something unique based on their own ideas, creativity, and past experiences with building. Knowledge is like that, according to constructivism. We connect new information to what we already know, creating a personal web of understanding.
This theory emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning. The learner is the architect of their own knowledge. The teacher acts as a guide or facilitator, helping students explore, ask questions, and build their own mental models.
Learning in a Connected World
The previous theories were developed before the internet. Connectivism is a newer theory that addresses how technology has changed the way we learn.
Connectivism

A learning theory for the digital age that emphasizes the role of social and cultural networks in learning. Knowledge exists in the network, and learning is the ability to access and navigate those networks.
Connectivism argues that in our modern world, knowledge is distributed across networks of people and information sources. Think about how you solve a problem today. You might search online, watch a video tutorial, or ask a question in a forum. You are tapping into a network.
In this view, the most important skill is not what you know, but your ability to find, evaluate, and synthesize information from different sources. Learning is the process of creating and navigating these connections.
The Community of Inquiry
Building on these ideas, especially for online learning, is the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. It's not a full-blown learning theory like the others, but a practical model for creating effective online learning experiences. It says that deep and meaningful learning happens when three key elements, or “presences,” overlap.
1. Cognitive Presence: This is the extent to which learners can construct meaning through sustained discussion and reflection. Are students grappling with the material, connecting ideas, and solving problems together?
2. Social Presence: This is the ability of participants to project their personal characteristics into the community. Do students feel like they are part of a real group with real people? This involves open communication, emotional expression, and group cohesion.
3. Teaching Presence: This involves the design of the educational experience and the facilitation of learning. Is the course well-structured? Is the instructor guiding discussions, providing feedback, and keeping everyone on track?
When all three presences are strong and balanced, the result is an ideal educational experience where students feel connected, engaged, and are truly learning.
