On a field, your opponent is the player across from you. In the water, your primary opponent is the water itself. It pushes back with a force called drag, and it's about 800 times denser than air. This means every explosive movement you're used to on turf—a quick jab step, a burst off the line—gets swallowed by the immense resistance.
Your first goal isn't to fight the water, but to work with it. The key is understanding buoyancy. Instead of planting your feet and driving forward, you need to find a stable, upright, and partially submerged position. Think less about pushing off the ground and more about pushing water away to propel yourself forward.

It starts with your legs. Lift your knees high, as if you're running through deep snow. This high-knee action helps pull your body forward through the water. Your feet should not be trying to 'push' off the lakebed. Instead, they cycle through the water, contributing to a continuous forward motion.
Simultaneously, your arms perform a motion called sculling, an action more familiar to synchronized swimmers than football players. With your elbows slightly bent and forearms submerged, you'll sweep your hands and forearms back and forth in a figure-eight pattern. This constant pressure against the water provides stability and supplemental propulsion.
This hybrid gait is not about speed. It's about efficient movement. You are creating a path of least resistance for your body while using your limbs to generate constant, steady force against the water.

All of this is useless without a strong core. In the water, your core is what prevents your upper body from flailing and your legs from sinking. It connects the propulsive actions of your arms and legs into a single, coordinated movement. This stability creates a solid 'platform' from which you can execute other skills like blocking, catching, or throwing.
Without constant core engagement, you’ll be at the mercy of the water’s push and pull. You become inefficient, wasting energy on staying upright instead of moving forward. A tight core keeps you vertical and streamlined, minimizing the body's surface area presented to the direction of movement. This directly reduces the amount of water you must displace with each step.
