You already know a lot about equations. An equation is a mathematical statement that says two things are exactly equal. For example, $2 + 3 = 5$ is an equation. The left side and the right side are perfectly balanced.

But what about when things aren't balanced? Think about the scores in a basketball game. It's rare for the final score to be a tie. One team almost always has more points than the other. Or think about two friends comparing their heights. One is likely taller than the other. These are comparisons, not equalities.

The biggest difference between an equation and an inequality is the number of possible answers. An equation is like a puzzle with one specific solution. If we have the equation $x + 4 = 10$, the only number that works for $x$ is 6. It's precise.

An inequality, however, describes a range of values. If you say, "I have more than $5 in my pocket," you aren't talking about one specific amount. You could have $6, $10.50, or even $100. There are many possibilities that make your mathematical statement true.

This idea shows up all the time in the real world. When you're shopping, you might have a budget. You can spend less than or equal to $20. Any amount from $0 up to $20 is a possibility.

Once you start looking for them, you'll see inequalities everywhere. They are essential for setting rules and limits.

In each of these cases, a simple "equals" sign wouldn't work. We aren't required to drive at exactly 65 mph or be exactly 48 inches tall. Instead, we are given a boundary and a whole range of numbers that are acceptable.

So, while equations are about finding a single, balanced truth, inequalities are about defining boundaries and exploring all the possibilities within them. They give us a way to talk about the real world, which is full of limits, minimums, and maximums.
