Paper 2 Structure

Tackling Paper 2

Paper 2 is where you get to show off your understanding of world history through two analytical essays. This exam is worth 25% of your final IB History HL grade, and you'll have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete it. The paper is designed to test your ability to recall relevant historical knowledge, organize it into a coherent argument, and support your points with specific evidence.

Let's break down how the paper is structured and what you need to do to succeed.

The Structure

Paper 2 is divided into two sections, Section A and Section B. You are required to answer one question from each section. The questions are based on the twelve world history topics, which are grouped into different themes. It's a test of both broad knowledge and specific detail.

SectionContent FocusQuestions ProvidedQuestions to Answer

Section BQuestions based on the 12 world history topics24 (2 per topic)1

Section A presents two broad, cross-regional questions. These questions require you to draw on knowledge from different parts of the world to form your answer.

Section B offers two questions for each of the twelve world history topics, for a total of 24 questions. This is where you can focus on the topics you know best. You select one of these 24 questions to answer.

Making Your Choices

Choosing your questions is a critical step. You must select one question from Section A and one question from Section B. There's a key rule here: your two essay responses must be on different world history topics. For example, if you answer a Section B question on Topic 8: Independence Movements (1800-2000), you cannot use examples primarily from that same topic to answer your Section A question.

Your two essays must cover different historical topics. Double-check your choices to ensure you're not focusing on the same area of study for both answers.

With 90 minutes for two essays, time management is essential. A good strategy is to allocate your time evenly. Spend about 5 minutes planning each essay and 40 minutes writing it. This leaves you with a structured approach and helps ensure both essays are well-developed and complete.

Now, let's test your understanding of the Paper 2 format.
