Introduction to High Agency

What is High Agency?

Some people seem to navigate life's challenges with a sense of control, while others feel like they're just along for the ride. The difference often comes down to a concept called agency. Simply put, agency is the belief that you are the primary cause of the effects in your own life. High agency means you see yourself as the driver, not a passenger.

Agency

noun

The capacity of an individual to act independently and to make their own free choices. It's the feeling of being in control of your actions and their consequences.

This isn't about having power over every external event. You can't control the weather or the economy. High agency is about focusing on your response to those events. It's the conviction that your choices and actions are the most powerful factors in shaping your outcomes.

Roots in Psychology

The idea of agency has deep roots in psychology, most notably in the work of Albert Bandura, a key figure in social cognitive theory. He didn't use the term "high agency," but he developed a closely related concept called "self-efficacy." This is the belief in your own ability to succeed in specific situations or accomplish a task. Bandura argued that our sense of self-efficacy plays a major role in how we approach goals, tasks, and challenges.

Someone with high self-efficacy for public speaking believes they can deliver a great speech. This belief makes them more likely to prepare, practice, and perform well. The concept of high agency is a broader application of this idea, extending from specific tasks to one's entire life.

Another related psychological concept is the "locus of control." People with an internal locus of control believe they are responsible for their own success. Those with an external locus of control believe that external forces, like luck or fate, determine their outcomes. High agency is fundamentally about cultivating an internal locus of control.

The Foundation for Growth

In personal development, high agency is a cornerstone concept. It's the mindset that allows for growth, learning, and meaningful change. Without it, self-improvement efforts often stall. Why try to build a new skill, start a business, or improve your health if you don't fundamentally believe your actions matter?

High agency is the antidote to learned helplessness, a state where a person feels they have no control over their situation, even when opportunities to create change exist. It's the shift from reacting to life to actively creating it.

A person with low agency wants things to happen. A person with high agency makes things happen.

Understanding this distinction is the first step. Recognizing that you can be the author of your own story, rather than just a character in it, opens up a new world of possibilities for personal and professional achievement. This core belief is what we'll explore and build upon.
