Introduction to First Principles Thinking

Thinking from the Ground Up

Most of the time, when we face a problem, we look for a template. We think about what's been done before, what our competitors are doing, or what conventional wisdom suggests. This is called reasoning by analogy, and it’s how we navigate most of our lives. It's efficient, but it rarely leads to breakthroughs.

First principles thinking is a different approach. Instead of starting with the current solution and making small improvements, you start with a blank slate. You break a problem down into its most fundamental truths—the things you know are true beyond a doubt. From there, you build your solution from the ground up.

This method forces you to move past assumptions and conventions. You question everything you think you know and build your reasoning on a foundation of solid facts.

Two Ways to Reason

Reasoning by analogy is like using a recipe. You follow steps that someone else has already figured out. It’s a reliable way to get a predictable result. If everyone is building cars with gasoline engines, you might work on making a more efficient gasoline engine.

First principles thinking is like learning about the chemistry of taste and the physics of heat to invent a new way of cooking altogether. You ignore the existing recipes. You ask: What is a car, fundamentally? A way to get from one point to another. What does that require? A power source, wheels, a chassis. What are the absolute physical limits and basic truths of each component? This line of questioning opens up entirely new possibilities, like electric vehicles.

An Ancient Idea

This powerful way of thinking isn't new. It traces back over 2,000 years to the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. He believed that true knowledge comes from understanding the foundational causes and principles of things. He called a first principle the “first basis from which a thing is known.”
