Your Digital Whiteboard
Excalidraw is a free, open-source virtual whiteboard. It lets you create diagrams, sketches, and wireframes that look like they were drawn by hand. It’s simple, fast, and runs right in your browser. There's nothing to install.
The hand-drawn style gives your diagrams a friendly, informal feel. This makes them great for brainstorming sessions, quick explanations, or planning out a new project without getting bogged down in formal design tools.
The Infinite Canvas
When you first visit excalidraw.com, you're dropped right onto a blank canvas. This is your workspace. Think of it as an endless sheet of paper where you have unlimited room to draw and think.
Getting around is easy. You can zoom in and out using your mouse wheel or trackpad. To move around the canvas without drawing, hold the Spacebar key and drag with your mouse. This lets you pan to any part of your workspace.
Navigating the Interface
The interface is clean and straightforward. Everything you need is visible without being cluttered. There are three main areas you'll use: the toolbar, the menu, and the properties panel.
The Toolbar contains your drawing tools. You'll find shapes like rectangles, ellipses, and diamonds, plus tools for drawing lines, arrows, and writing text. The Main Menu, in the top-left corner, is for managing your files. You can save your work, open existing files, or export your diagram as an image.
The Properties Panel appears at the top when you select a tool or an object. It lets you customize things like color, line style, and opacity. This panel is context-sensitive, meaning it changes based on what you have selected.
Creating Your First Diagram
Let's make a simple flowchart. This is a great way to get comfortable with the basic tools.
- Select the Rectangle tool from the toolbar and draw a box on the canvas. This will be the start of our process.
With the rectangle selected, go to the Text tool and click inside your shape. Type "Start". You'll see the text appear right in the center.
- Now, grab the Arrow tool. Click and drag from your first box downwards to create a connecting line.
Next, select the Diamond tool and draw one at the end of your arrow. This shape is typically used for decisions. Add the text "Is it working?" inside the diamond.
- From the diamond, draw two arrows branching out. One will represent "Yes" and the other "No".
At the end of each arrow, draw another rectangle. In one, write "Continue". In the other, write "Fix it". You've just mapped out a simple decision-making process.
