Models for How We Learn
Why do some teaching methods work better than others? How does your brain actually store a new piece of information? For centuries, thinkers have tried to answer these questions. The result is a set of ideas called learning theories.
A learning theory is simply a model that tries to explain how people absorb, process, and hold on to knowledge. There isn't one single theory that explains everything, but a few major ones provide a powerful framework for understanding how we learn.
Learning theories describe the conditions and processes through which learning occurs, providing teachers with models to develop instruction sessions that lead to better learning.
Behaviorism: Learning as a Response
Behaviorism is one of the earliest and most straightforward learning theories. It suggests that learning is all about observable behaviors. Internal thoughts and feelings are ignored because they can't be seen or measured. Instead, behaviorists focus on how learners respond to external stimuli in their environment.
Think about teaching a dog to sit. You say "sit" (a stimulus) and guide it into a sitting position. When it does, you give it a treat (a positive reinforcement). Over time, the dog learns to associate the command with the action and the reward. That's behaviorism in a nutshell. Learning is seen as a change in behavior resulting from stimulus-response associations.
According to behaviorism, the learner's mind is a "black box." We can only observe the inputs (stimuli) and the outputs (behavior), not what happens in between.
This theory views the learner as relatively passive, simply responding to environmental cues. While it's useful for explaining things like habit formation or rote memorization, it doesn't fully account for more complex types of learning, like problem-solving or creative thinking.
Cognitivism: The Mind as a Processor
By the mid-20th century, some thinkers felt that behaviorism was too limited. They wanted to open the "black box" of the mind and understand the mental processes that behaviorism ignored. This led to the rise of cognitivism.
Cognitivism views the mind as a computer. It suggests that learning is an internal process of information processing, storage, and retrieval. When you learn something new, your brain takes in information (input), processes it, connects it to existing knowledge, and stores it in your memory. Later, you can retrieve that information to solve problems or answer questions (output).

This theory puts the focus on mental activities like thinking, memory, knowing, and problem-solving. Unlike behaviorism, it sees the learner as an active participant who processes information rather than just reacting to it.
Constructivism: Building Knowledge
Constructivism takes the idea of an active learner a step further. It proposes that learning isn't about receiving or processing information, but about actively constructing our own knowledge. Each person builds their own understanding of the world by filtering new information through their unique past experiences, beliefs, and prior knowledge.
Imagine a group of people looking at the same abstract painting. One person might see a cityscape, another a forest, and a third might feel a sense of chaos. None of them are wrong. They are each constructing their own meaning based on their individual perspectives. That's the core idea of constructivism.
In constructivism, learning is an active, social process of creating personal meaning from experiences, rather than just acquiring objective facts.
This theory emphasizes hands-on, problem-based learning and collaboration. The learner isn't an empty vessel to be filled with knowledge, but a builder who creates their own mental structures. Knowledge isn't something that's simply transferred from teacher to student; it's built and rebuilt through exploration and social interaction.
Each of these theories offers a different lens through which to view learning. While behaviorism focuses on external actions, cognitivism delves into mental processing, and constructivism highlights the personal creation of knowledge.
