Introduction to Duolingo

Fun, Free, for Everyone

Duolingo has become one of the most recognizable names in language learning. Its core mission is to make education universally accessible. It's built on the idea that anyone, anywhere, should be able to learn a new skill for free.

To keep the lights on while offering free content, Duolingo uses a “freemium” business model. The main features are available to everyone at no cost, supported by ads. For users who want an uninterrupted experience and a few extra perks, there’s a paid subscription called Super Duolingo that removes ads and offers additional features.

It uses gamification to keep learners motivated, offering bite-sized lessons that cover vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

A World of Languages

The platform is best known for its extensive language course offerings. You can find widely spoken languages like Spanish, French, and German right alongside languages with fewer speakers, such as Irish, Welsh, and Navajo. This variety reflects the company’s goal of preserving and promoting languages from all corners of the globe.

Whether you're learning a language for travel, work, or just for fun, Duolingo provides a starting point for many learners.

These resources are unlikely to guide learners beyond basic proficiency levels — greetings, basic requests, and so forth, but many of them do provide good introductions to the new language, and a bit of a foundation before starting intensive training.

More Than Just Words

Recently, Duolingo has expanded beyond language instruction. The app now includes subjects like Music, Math, and even Chess. These new courses apply the same friendly, game-like approach to help users learn fundamentals in these areas. The music course teaches you to read notes and play simple tunes on a virtual piano, while the math course focuses on sharpening elementary and middle school-level skills.

This expansion shows a broader ambition: to be a comprehensive platform for accessible education, no matter the subject.
