Paper 4 of the HKDSE English exam is all about speaking. It’s designed to see how well you can communicate your ideas and interact with others in English. The whole test is a conversation, not a memory test.

It’s split into two main sections: an Individual Response where you speak on your own, and a Group Discussion where you talk with other candidates.

The speaking test is carefully timed to give everyone a fair chance to speak. You'll be in a group with a few other candidates. Before the test begins, you'll have some quiet time to prepare.

Here’s a breakdown of how the time is divided:

During the 10-minute preparation time, you’ll receive a question card with the topic for both parts of the test. You can make notes, but you won't be able to take them into the exam room.

Examiners are looking at your overall ability to communicate effectively. They don't expect perfection, but they do want to see that you can express yourself clearly. Your performance is judged on a few key areas.

These domains apply to both the individual and group parts of the test, but certain skills are more prominent in each.

After the preparation time, each candidate gets one minute to share their thoughts on the topic. This is your chance to present your own ideas without interruption.

In this section, examiners are evaluating your ability to:

• Organize your ideas: Can you structure a short, coherent response?
• Speak fluently: Do you express yourself smoothly and at a natural pace?
• Use language effectively: Do you use appropriate vocabulary and grammar to convey your points clearly?

Once everyone has given their individual response, the group discussion begins. This part lasts about eight minutes. The goal is to have a natural conversation with the other candidates about the same topic.

Here, the focus shifts slightly. Examiners want to see how well you interact with others. The skills being evaluated include:

• Communication strategies: Can you start a discussion, ask questions, and respond to others' points?
• Maintaining interaction: Do you help the conversation flow by agreeing, disagreeing politely, or adding to what someone else has said?
• Balancing speaking and listening: Do you contribute your own ideas while also giving others a chance to speak?

The group discussion isn't a debate you need to win. It's a collaboration where you build on each other's ideas to explore a topic together.

Understanding the structure and goals of Paper 4 is the first step toward feeling confident and prepared for the exam.
