What's in a Number?

Think about the number 5. Now think about the number 500. They both use the digit '5', but they mean very different things. One is five, and the other is five hundred. The only thing that changed was the digit's position.

This is the core idea of place value. In our number system, we only use ten digits (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9). How we create numbers larger than nine depends entirely on where we put these digits.

A digit's value is determined by its place, or position, in a number. The same digit can have a different value depending on where it sits. Let's look at the number 222. It has three 2s, but each one means something different.

Even though the digit is '2' in each spot, its value changes from two, to twenty, to two hundred based on its column.

Reading Big Numbers

Place value helps us make sense of large numbers. Each position is ten times bigger than the place to its right. We can organize this in a chart.

Let's use this chart to read the number 4,738. We see the digit 4 in the thousands place, 7 in the hundreds place, 3 in the tens place, and 8 in the ones place.

So, we read it as "four thousand, seven hundred thirty-eight." The name of each place tells us how to say the number.

As numbers get bigger, new places appear to the left, each ten times larger than the last one: ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions, and so on.

Breaking Numbers Apart

Understanding place value allows us to break a number down into its parts. This is called decomposing a number. It's like taking apart a Lego model to see all the individual bricks it's made of.

Let's decompose the number 6,295.

The 6 is in the thousands place, so its value is 6×1000=60006 \times 1000 = 6000. The 2 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 2×100=2002 \times 100 = 200. The 9 is in the tens place, so its value is 9×10=909 \times 10 = 90. The 5 is in the ones place, so its value is 5×1=55 \times 1 = 5.

When we add these values together, we get the original number.

6000+200+90+5=6,2956000 + 200 + 90 + 5 = 6,295

This skill of seeing a number as a collection of its parts is crucial. When you start working with bigger calculations, like multi-digit division, being able to decompose numbers will make the process much easier to understand.
