What Makes an Argument?

When we hear the word “argument,” we often think of a heated disagreement. But in logic and rhetoric, an argument is something different. It’s a structured attempt to persuade someone of a particular point of view. It’s not about winning a fight; it’s about presenting a clear, logical case for why something is true or should be done.

The Core Components

Every solid argument, no matter how simple or complex, is built from three essential parts: a claim, evidence, and reasoning.

Let's break these down:

  • Claim: This is the main point you are trying to make—the conclusion you want your audience to accept. A claim should be debatable. "The sky is blue" is an observation, not a claim. "Our city needs more public parks" is a claim because people can agree or disagree with it.

  • Evidence: This is the information you use to support your claim. Evidence can include facts, statistics, expert testimony, or concrete examples. It’s the "what you know" part of the argument. Without evidence, a claim is just an assertion.

  • Reasoning: This is the logical link that connects your evidence to your claim. It explains why the evidence proves your point. Reasoning is often the most critical part of an argument, as it shows your thought process and builds a convincing case.

For example:

  • Claim: Our town should install more bike lanes.
  • Evidence: A recent study found that cities with more bike lanes have 20% less traffic congestion.
  • Reasoning: Since our town suffers from heavy traffic, adding bike lanes would likely reduce congestion and improve commute times for everyone.

Two Paths of Logic

Arguments generally follow one of two logical paths: deductive or inductive reasoning. Understanding the difference helps you build stronger arguments and spot weaknesses in others'.

Deductive reasoning starts with a general principle or rule and applies it to a specific case to reach a certain conclusion. If the initial principles (the premises) are true, the conclusion is guaranteed to be true. It's a top-down approach.

Here's a classic example of deductive reasoning:

  1. All humans are mortal. (General principle)
  2. Socrates is a human. (Specific case)
  3. Therefore, Socrates is mortal. (Guaranteed conclusion)

Inductive reasoning, on the other hand, works the other way around. It starts with specific observations or examples and uses them to form a broader generalization or conclusion. It’s a bottom-up approach. With inductive reasoning, the conclusion is probable, but not guaranteed.

Here's an example of inductive reasoning:

  1. The first swan I saw was white. (Specific observation)
  2. The second swan I saw was white. (Specific observation)
  3. Therefore, all swans are probably white. (Generalization)

Of course, we now know that black swans exist, which shows the limitation of inductive reasoning. The conclusion is only as strong as the evidence you've gathered.
