Primary vs. Secondary Data

Informed Consent: People must know what they're signing up for. You need to clearly explain your research purpose, how the data will be used, and any potential risks or benefits. They must then voluntarily agree to participate, without feeling pressured.

This means no confusing jargon or hidden clauses. The person providing the data should have a clear and accurate picture of the process before they agree to anything.

Privacy & Confidentiality: You have a duty to protect the information you collect. Personal data should be kept secure and, whenever possible, anonymized. Anonymizing data means removing identifiers like names or addresses, so the information cannot be traced back to an individual.

Breaking these ethical rules doesn't just invalidate your research; it can cause real harm to participants and damage the public's trust in research as a whole.

Common Challenges

Data collection is often harder than it sounds. One of the biggest hurdles is bias. A biased sample occurs when the group you collect data from doesn't accurately represent the larger population you want to understand.
