Deconstructing Goals from First Principles

You already understand how to work backward from a goal. But what if the goal itself is flawed? Often, our objectives are bundles of assumptions, traditions, and别人的期望. A goal like "Get a promotion" seems clear, but it's loaded with implicit beliefs about what a promotion entails and why you want it.

First-principles thinking forces us to decompose the objective itself. Instead of accepting the goal as given, we break it down into its fundamental truths. What are you actually trying to achieve? Is it more responsibility? A higher income? The respect of your peers? Each of these is a different objective that might not require a traditional promotion.

By stripping away the assumptions, you can define your Minimum Viable Achievement (MVA). This isn't just the first step; it's the leanest possible version of your desired outcome. It’s the core result that delivers the most critical value you're seeking, without any of the vanity metrics or conventional window dressing.

For example, if your real goal is to gain leadership experience, the MVA might be leading a small, high-impact project within your current role, not necessarily waiting for a new title.

Mapping the Dependencies

Once you have a first-principles objective, you can map the path to get there. Simple backward chaining creates a linear to-do list, but complex goals don't work that way. The real world is a web of interconnected tasks and dependencies.

Non-linear dependency mapping treats your goal like a system. You identify the key components—skills to learn, resources to acquire, people to influence, milestones to hit—and map how they relate to one another. Some tasks will be prerequisites for many others. Others might be done in parallel. This map reveals the true structure of the challenge.

This map helps you spot the high-leverage nodes—the critical points where a small amount of effort unlocks the greatest number of subsequent steps. In our SaaS example, "Validate Problem" is a high-leverage node. Getting it right informs the feature set and marketing strategy, preventing wasted work down the line. Getting it wrong invalidates multiple branches of the map.

As you trace the dependencies backward from your goal, the nature of these nodes changes. Closer to the goal, the nodes are often execution-focused (e.g., "Build MVP"). Further back, they become strategic and foundational (e.g., "Validate Problem"). Identifying these foundational nodes is the key to building a robust plan. They are the bedrock of your entire effort.

The chain of dependencies that represents the longest path through your map is known as the Critical Path, a concept borrowed from project management. This isn't necessarily the most important path, but it dictates the minimum time to completion. Any delay on this path directly delays the entire project. Your map allows you to see this path clearly and allocate resources accordingly.

Manage complexity through decomposition

By understanding the MVA, the non-linear dependencies, and the high-leverage nodes, you can identify the most efficient route through the complexity. This Minimum Viable Achievement Path focuses your energy on the tasks that create the most momentum toward your core objective.
