Counting every single square unit to find the area of a rectangle works, but it's slow. Imagine trying to count the squares on a classroom floor or a soccer field! There's a much faster way using a shortcut called a formula.
Formulas are like recipes in math. They give you a step-by-step way to solve a problem.
For rectangles, we have two key formulas: one for the area (the space inside) and one for the perimeter (the distance around the outside).
Finding the Area
The area of a rectangle is its length multiplied by its width. You might have noticed this when you were counting squares. A rectangle that is 5 units long and 3 units wide has 3 rows of 5 squares. That’s a multiplication problem: . The formula is just a cleaner way to write this.
Sometimes, you'll hear people use the words base and height instead of length and width. They mean the same thing. It doesn’t matter which side you call the length and which you call the width, the result of the multiplication will be the same. This is because of a math rule called the which states that order doesn't matter when you multiply.
Let's say your tablet screen is 10 inches long and 7 inches wide. To find its area, you multiply: 10 inches × 7 inches = 70 square inches.
Walking the Perimeter
Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape. Imagine a tiny ant walking along all the edges of your tablet. The total distance it walks is the perimeter. To find it, you just add up the lengths of all four sides. Since the opposite sides of a rectangle are always equal, we can use another formula to speed things up.
This formula is the same as adding . We just group the two lengths and two widths together. Let's use our tablet example again. It's 10 inches long and 7 inches wide.
Perimeter = (2 × 10 inches) + (2 × 7 inches) Perimeter = 20 inches + 14 inches Perimeter = 34 inches.
Notice that the unit for perimeter is just 'inches', not 'square inches'. That’s because perimeter is a one-dimensional measurement—it’s just a length, as if you stretched all the sides out into one long line. A key part of geometry is using the correct for what you are describing.
