Slide Master Customization
Master Your Slides
Have you ever found yourself changing the font on every single slide of a presentation? Or maybe you've tried to add a company logo to the corner of each slide, one by one. It's tedious work that opens the door for inconsistencies. There’s a much better way: the Slide Master.
Think of the Slide Master as the blueprint for your entire presentation. It controls the look, feel, and formatting of all your slides from one central place.
By making changes to the Slide Master, you can instantly update fonts, colors, backgrounds, and logos across your whole deck. This not only saves a huge amount of time but also ensures every slide looks professional and consistent.
Instead of manually tweaking each individual slide, you can edit once in Slide Master and have the changes cascade down through your entire deck.
The Master and its Layouts
To get started, go to the View tab in PowerPoint and click Slide Master. You'll see a new pane on the left with a series of slide thumbnails. It's important to understand the hierarchy here.
The very top slide in this pane is the main Slide Master. Any change you make here—like changing the title font or adding a logo—will apply to every single slide in your presentation. It’s the global control.
Below the main Slide Master are the individual Layouts. These are specific blueprints for different types of slides, like your title slide, a slide with a header and content, or a slide that's just a blank slate. Modifying a layout only affects slides that use that specific layout.
For example, if you want your company logo to appear on every slide except the title slide, you would add the logo to the main Slide Master first. Then, you would go to the Title Slide Layout, and either hide or delete the logo from just that layout.
Headers and Footers
The Slide Master is also the perfect place to manage headers and footers. These are small pieces of information that appear consistently at the top or bottom of your slides, like the date, a presentation title, or slide numbers.
While in Slide Master view, you can edit the footer placeholders directly on the master or on individual layouts. To turn them on or off, go to the Insert tab and click Header & Footer. A dialog box will appear where you can check boxes to include:
- Date and time (which can update automatically)
- Slide number
- A fixed footer text (like a company name or confidentiality notice)
Once you apply these changes, they will appear on all slides that have the footer placeholders enabled in their layout.
Creating Custom Templates
After you've perfected your Slide Master and layouts, you don't have to repeat the process every time. You can save your work as a custom PowerPoint template.
A template (.potx file) is a starting point for new presentations. When you open a template, you get a new, blank presentation that already has all your custom designs, fonts, colors, and layouts built in.
To save your design as a template, go to
File > Save As, choose a location, and then change theSave as typedropdown menu toPowerPoint Template (*.potx). Give it a memorable name, like "Company Official Template."
Once saved, you can find your custom template under the Personal or Custom tab when you create a new presentation. This is the key to maintaining brand consistency across an entire organization and dramatically speeding up the creation of new slide decks.
