Introduction to PETG

The All-Rounder Filament

If you've ever looked at the bottom of a plastic water bottle, you've seen the letters PET. That stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate, one of the most common plastics in the world. Add a little something extra, and you get PETG, a star player in the world of 3D printing.

The "G" in PETG stands for glycol, which is added during the manufacturing process. This small chemical tweak makes a huge difference. It prevents the plastic from becoming cloudy and brittle when heated, which makes it much more suitable for the layer-by-layer process of 3D printing. Essentially, it takes the common, reliable PET and makes it stronger, more durable, and easier to work with.

Properties That Matter

PETG is often described as the perfect middle ground between PLA and ABS, two other common printing filaments. It combines some of the best features of both.

First, it's strong and durable. Parts printed with PETG can withstand more stress than those made from PLA. They have a slight flex to them, so instead of snapping under pressure, they tend to bend first. This makes PETG an excellent choice for mechanical parts that need to be tough, like brackets, gears, or protective casings.

It also holds up better against heat and chemicals. While a PLA print might deform in a hot car, a PETG part is much more likely to keep its shape. It’s also resistant to water, acids, and alkalis.

If you do this—and especially if you’re using an open-bed printer like my Bambu Labs A1, which doesn’t handle filament like the UV-resistant ASA well—you’ll want to make sure to print using PETG plastic instead of the typical PLA.

Comparing the Basics

Understanding where PETG fits requires comparing it to the other common filaments. It's often chosen when PLA isn't strong enough, but the printing difficulty and fumes of ABS are undesirable.
