The Architecture of Sleep

REM Sleep: About 90 minutes after falling asleep, you enter your first REM stage. Your eyes move rapidly behind your closed eyelids. Your brain activity looks surprisingly similar to when you're awake. This is when most vivid dreaming occurs. Your body is temporarily paralyzed, a safety measure to prevent you from acting out your dreams.
As you can see, the structure of your sleep changes throughout the night. The first half is dominated by deep, restorative N3 sleep. As morning approaches, you spend more time in lighter N2 sleep and dream-filled REM sleep.
